Safety Information
Topical GHK-Cu is generally well tolerated. Reactions, when they occur, are typically mild and localized to the area of application. Layered formulations (Renewal, Hormonal Support) carry the safety profile of their additional actives in addition to GHK-Cu — review the product-specific contraindications below.
Most side effects, if present, are mild and resolve as your skin or scalp acclimates.
Possible side effects of topical GHK-Cu protocols include:
- Mild redness or warmth at the application site
- Transient stinging or tingling on application
- Dryness or flaking (more common with the Renewal cream during retinoid ramp-up)
- Scalp itch or mild irritation (with the 3% solution)
- Allergic contact reaction (rare; discontinue if it occurs and contact your provider)
- Layered formulations carry the side effect profile of their additional actives (tretinoin photosensitivity, estriol-related local effects)
Do not use vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and GHK-Cu in the same routine. Copper and ascorbic acid can react and may inactivate each other. Alternate AM and PM if both are part of your protocol.
The Hormonal Support cream contains bioidentical estriol and is contraindicated in patients with a personal history of estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer or active hormone-sensitive malignancy.
The Renewal cream contains tretinoin and is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Do not use GHK-Cu formulations if you:
- Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- Have a known hypersensitivity to GHK-Cu, copper, or any excipient in the formulation
- Have a personal history of estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer (Hormonal Support)
- Are under 18 years of age
Cautions — speak with your provider before starting:
- Wilson's disease or any condition affecting copper metabolism
- Active dermatitis or open wounds at the application site — postpone until healed
- Recent procedures (laser, microneedling, peels) — coordinate timing with your provider
- Current retinoid use — if starting Renewal, your existing retinoid will be replaced or sequenced
- Active hormone-sensitive malignancy or HRT — required disclosure before Hormonal Support
GHK-Cu has not been approved by the FDA as a finished pharmaceutical product. The formulations dispensed through Craft Peptides are compounded medications prepared by state-licensed 503A pharmacies under a valid prescription. Compounded medications are not reviewed for effectiveness or safety by the FDA on a per-batch basis — they are customized pharmaceutical products offered as an alternative to commercial FDA-approved medications.
